In 1987, following the creation of Katsina State out of former Kaduna State, the Kaduna State Government saw the need to have its own School of Nursing. The Government then applied to the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, the regulatory body that controls standards of Nursing and Midwifery training in the country, for the establishment of a School of Nursing at the site of the already existing School of Midwifery, Kafanchan, Kaduna State.
In May 1989, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria gave a provisional approval for establishment of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Kafanchan. In 1990, the School was upgraded to a full-fledged College of Nursing and Midwifery, the first of its kind in the Northern part of the country.
